It’s not everyday that you get a chance to sample authentic, local Southern Carolina cooking in London. The American State is already known for its beaches with Myrtle Beach voted the best beach in the United States. It has also built up a reputation for its golf courses. Food has now been added as an attraction.
Food Network Star Orchid Paulmeier was at Leiths Cookery School in London to promote Southern style cooking to the foodies amongst us. Orchid has her own restaurant One Hot Mama and the dishes she cooked for us, I was one of several travel journalists invited to taste her food, were Southern favourites mixed with her own family recipes. “Comfort food with a kick”, she describes it.
We started with a prawn dish made with grits, ground corn typically used in the South; blue crab soup similar to a seafood bisque; fried chicken and shrimps served with waffles; and slow cooked barbecue ribs finished off with her own Sriracha hot chilli sauce. Some where along the way warm maple syrup was added! The meal culminated with banana pudding made with fresh bananas, and a sweet banana cream served with vanilla wafers. A dish you can find on all menus in the area. This is hearty food where any thought of calorie counting has to immediately be thrown out of the window.
