Fences is ‘the’ Play to see

3.Fences, Lenny Henry (c)Nobby ClarkLenny Henry puts in a superlative performance as the patriarch Troy Maxon in Fences at the Duchess Theatre. The play is the winner of the New York Drama Critics’ Award, two Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize.
A once gifted athlete, Moxon is denied his chance at the big time and now struggles through daily life in Pittsburgh. Resentful of a world he believes has denied him at every turn, he takes out his anger on a sports-obsessed son and his loyal wife.
Set between the Korean and Vietnam wars, it is the story of a black family trying to hold itself together and of what happens when a strong man is robbed of his dreams.
The irony of the story is that Moxon stands up for himself at work, it is a time of change for the country, and is surprised to be rewarded for doing so with a better job.
With equally excellent performances from the supporting cast, it is7.Fences, Lenny Henry and Ashley Zhangazha (c)Nobby Clark one of the highlights of the London stage.
